Dien Bien Phu is the capital of the province with the same name. It was the location of a battle which took place in Tonkin from 20 November 1953 to 7 May 1954 against the French Union forces. It is considered to be the place of victory for national liberation.

But what tourists often don't realise is that there are numerous wonderful sites just a few kilometres from this town that are seldom visited but are nonetheless authentic and magnificent&nbsp;

Someone talks about Vietnam and you automatically think of spring rolls, pointed hats or shoulder yokes, those large sections of bamboo and their two suspended woven baskets. When I arrived at Hoa Binh during my <a href="/vietnam/">trip to Vietnam</a> the first thing that I asked myself was what I could do there. Not only are there almost no hotels but the town is quite ugly and charmless. If for one reason or another you find yourself stuck here, I suggest you kill time by visiting the hydroelectric dam or by climbing the hill to admire the big statue of Ho Chi Minh. With a bit of time in front of me, I decided to explore the surrounding countryside. I met the Muong there. There are also Dzao but fewer of them. I must admit I don't have any other ideas to suggest, apart from taking a bus and leaving.
