Dien Bien Phu is the capital of the province with the same name. It was the location of a battle which took place in Tonkin from 20 November 1953 to 7 May 1954 against the French Union forces. It is considered to be the place of victory for national liberation.

The town of Sapa is located at the summit of a hill, at 1,600 metres of altitude. It is surrounded by beautiful scenery and sits above the Muong Hoa valley, where it is dominated by the famous Fansipan at 3,143 metres. An obligatory stopover during your tour of Vietnam.

Someone talks about Vietnam and you automatically think of spring rolls, pointed hats or shoulder yokes, those large sections of bamboo and their two suspended woven baskets. I discovered the Red River Delta in Hanoi, via the bridge built by Gustave Eiffel. A vast expanse of marshy water invaded by small coloured huts and crops, in particular Palm trees. I took the local train and travelled downriver to its mouth in Haiphong. On this side, the region is heavily industrialised and the landscapes all look alike. This location is the ideal point of departure for an exploration of Halong Bay, without the crowds. It is towards Ninh Binh that the delta becomes stunning. A region bordered with impressive karstic mountains. I enjoyed wandering around on a scooter amid the rice paddies and discovering the rural life of the northern plains of the country. One of my fondest memories during my <a href="/vietnam/">trip to Vietnam</a>. The area offers many opportunities for outdoor activities such as Van Long, Tam Coc or Cuoc Phuong Park. When I was there in winter, the area was wrapped in a huge blanket of fog, giving it a very special atmosphere.
