I love spending time in Samut Songkram. The region is heavily forested, particularly by coconut palms. Here, you can find artisans making pure sugar from palm oil harvested straight from the trees. I saw it being done in front of me and was able to buy the product direct from the farm where it’s produced. If you want a different travel experience, got to the Mae Klong market near the Samut Songkram train station. The region is fertile and you’ll find all kinds of fruit and vegetables. However, its specialty is that the market runs alongside the train tracks, so close that when a train passes, the merchants have to take down their stalls to clear the way! As I have my own vehicle and am naturally curious, I went for a wander in the little alleyways and dirt tracks to see the salt marshes and their inhabitants, to breathe the sea air, and enjoy authentic and traditional Thailand, the way I like it. And it’s only two hours from Bangkok. What more could you want?
