This is the type of little-known destination where you'll experience new sights and sounds. The journey alone is worth it and I crossed the province ofKanchanaburi (as I like driving) to get there. The region ofSangkhlaburiis mountainous, with Burma right next door, so I went as far as I could along the Three Pagoda Pass, until I saw the newly designed flag of Myanmar, waving in front of me. On arriving at the village, I was first taken aback by the view. The rickety wooden bridge was built by the Mon tribe, who live in Wangka, the village on the other side. I don't think many people go there; they usually stop at the bridge and the market. But I wanted to go and have a look so went further into the village. The bridge is 400m long and its impressive height is to take in to account the fluctuating water levels of the man-made lake that borders the village. The bridge broke in half during the 2013 storms. It's only just been reopened. Early morning mists give Sangkhlaburi a mysterious charm, as monks cross the bridge to collect offerings from the market, which is in full swing. The setting is amazing. I suggest you visit the Burmese temple of Wat Wang Wiwekaram,, but, even more so, the ancient one, abandoned since the lake was built. It gets flooded during the rainy season but you can get there by foot during the dry season.
