<p> <strong>The Golden Triangle is a classic part</strong> of every <a href="/thailand/">trip round Thailand</a>. I have stayed there several times and I like the area, bordered by mountains on one side and the Mekong on the other. When the weather is good, the colors are magnificent - the blue sky, the brown river and the great golden Buddha framing the triangle.</p> <p>There's lots for the sporty to do: I tried climbing and bamboo rafting. As it's mountainous, the Golden Triangleis also great for trekking or walking in the forest.</p> <p>You can do the visit in one day if you just want to "see" the area that makes up the Triangle, but I really advise you to stay at least 2 or 3 days, so you can explore the region's richness in more detail. True, some of the hotels are not cheap, but they do give you a wonderful view when you wake up. I remember looking at the view over 3 countries covered with a morning mist - magical. And that's without talking about north Thailand's culinary specialties, which make the region unmissable as far as I am concerned.  </p>

The region is best known for producing "white gold," or opium, because it is the biggest producer in the world.</div> <div>I found the region restful and charming, completely immersed in nature along the banks of the Mekong and in the middle of the mountains. I ate in little villages right next to the river, I visited temples, and, for those who are interested, it's also possible to find out about the opium market.</div> <div>Must see:  Wat Rong Khun, a magnificent white temple. Nature lovers can also go trekking or walking for one or several days in the region.</div>

<p class="MsoNormal">Formerly famous for its opium production, the Golden Triangle, to me, is a region surrounded by mystery. Today the poppy fields have disappeared from the Thai mountains to be replaced by tea, rice, and coffee, and the area is open for tourism.</p>
<p class="MsoNormal">So, excited to find out more about the region, I went to Chiang Rai, the main town of the Golden Triangle, and then I went off to explore the windy roads of the mountains around it. I loved it! Waterfalls, rivers, jungle, temples perched on rocky outcrops, villages hiding in the landscape, hot springs, <strong style="mso-bidi-font-weight:
normal" data-mce-style="mso-bidi-font-weight: normal;">there are endless places to go in the  Golden Triangle</strong> all in unbelievable countryside. If you are a trekking fan, there are some great walks that take you up to meet the ethnic minorities who live in the mountains.</p>
