Situated in the midst of the mountains, this temple is one of the most famous in the country and is listed as a UNESCO world heritage site. It is renowned as the home of the Tripitaka Koreana, a set of wooden tablets on which Buddhist texts were written to protect the kingdom from the invasion of the Mongols. It is the oldest sacred scripture in the world and has been preserved over the centuries thanks to specific processes.
The buildings are impressive and the atmosphere is peaceful and encourages meditation and relaxation. There are a number of hermitages in the surrounding area, amidst the forest and mountains.
Quite a few hikes are possible, including the ascent of Mount Gayasan, which offers some beautiful landscapes.
