I found that the landscape of Waterbury very different to that of <a href="/south-africa/">Kruger Park</a> and that the reserves were good value for money, given that there are fewer tourists in this area. The lodges are absolutely luxurious, and the fact it's not crowded means you can watch the animals in peace and quiet. Thanks to the work of the naturalist Clive Walking, more than 400,000 hectares of the Waterberg park are classed as a biosphere reserve by Unesco. 
The little village of Vaalwater is a must-see in the middle of this endless wilderness. Don't miss a chance to try some biltong made from Bonsmara cows at the local butcher's... Fun fact: at Thabazimbi, the "iron mountain", it's impossible to orientate yourself using a compass, as there is too much of the mineral in the ground and the magnetic fields are too strong!
