After almost half a century of being under supervision, Poland has been slowly, but surely, opening its doors to the world over the past twenty years. Nestled in the forelands of the Carpathian Mountains, the small region of Sandomierz is charming. Aside from the lovely town of <a href="/poland/">Sandomierz</a>, the castle of Baranów Sandomierski ("the sheep of Sandomierz") is a little gem with Italian influences. This late-Renaissance castle (late 16th/early 17th Century), erected towards the north of the Vistula river, has certainly retained its grandeur. The castle is well worth a visit, if only to see the beautiful courtyard with its arcades.
For me,though, the highlight of Baranów Sandomierski is the castle's landscaped formal garden, which is particularly opulent and well-maintained. With its boxwood hedges, its gardens and its paths lined with hundred-year-old trees, this is a truly splendid corner in the upper Vistula valley.
