After almost half a century of being under supervision, Poland has been slowly, but surely, opening its doors to the world over the past twenty years. Vibrant and dynamic, one of its main attractions is its striking blend of modernism and archaism. The towns boast many different sights: the capital of Warsaw is a showcase of the country’s new modernity, while the picturesque Krakow and Gdansk seem at times to be set in another era. Equally, you can discover dreamy landscapes, from the Baltic beaches to the many lush and unspoilt natural areas (natural parks, ‘the land of the thousand lakes’). But Poland also has a very heavy history, which you can, and should, discover, by visiting sites charged with history, such as the Warsaw ghetto and the infamous Auschwitz-Birkenau concentration camp. Gniew is an interesting place to visit along the Teutonic knights trail in lower Vistula.  A pretty town sitting on a hill, it contains medieval streets and two large red-brick buildings, the church and the Teutonic castle.

Gniew is one of those little towns of the lower Vistula that contain an astonishing amount of medieval heritage left behind by the Teutonic knights, whose state once extended over the whole region. The places in which the northern Germanic architecture from this era has been preserved, with its heavy use of red bricks and its Gothic styling, are exceptionally charming in character. 
The most famous site in Gniew is the Ordensburg, a medieval castle constructed from red bricks and which was once one of the bastions of the Teutonic knights. The castle here is similar to the one at Malbork, which was the knights' capital. To visit it is to immerse yourself in the medieval period of this curious order of crusaders who established a state in Poland. Its inner courtyard, covered by a very well-integrated modern glass roof, is very pleasant.
Additionally, there are the lovely and well-preserved little medieval streets in the centre of Gniew to visit and the Gothic church of Saint-Nicholas, which is a veritable architectural jewel. Atop its little promontory above the Vistula, Gniew has thus clearly managed to preserve its old-world charm, which is much in evidence in the town. It really makes for a pleasant place to visit.
