Sur is the capital of the Ash Sharqiyah province. Located southeast of Oman, at just two hours drive from Muscat, the city has numerous activities on offer for nature lovers, as well as a booming dhow industry.
Ash Sharqiyah Province boasts a stunning natural heritage. Top of the list are its turtles, with a major nesting site at Ras Al Jinz.
A holiday in Oman means you can explore the numerous wadis (rivers) that wind their way around the region. The must-sees are the Wadi Tiwi and Wadi Khabbah. They are nothing short of spectacular.
And, if you fancy visiting a truly magical place, then head to the water hole at Bimmah. Fed by water infiltrated from the soil, it's a natural well located in the Hawiyat Najm Park. There's safe, easy access if you want to climb down. Don't forget your snorkeling gear and swimwear!
However, bear in mind that it's only worth visiting if the weather permits. If it's too hot or humid, the city of Sur has plenty of other activities on offer.
Situated on the coast, Sur is famous for the sparkling white houses that line the seafront, as well as for its thriving dhow production industry.
Dhows are traditional wooden sailing boats that are mainly used to transport goods. Today, Sur is the only Omani city that has retained traditional shipyards, designed for the construction of dhows. There are seven in total, all located between Sur and Al Ayja, not far from the city centre. You can visit the shipyards and learn about the meticulous production techniques employed by the builders.
