During my<a href="/morocco/"> trip to Morocco</a>, I took a night bus from Fes to Rissani, not far from Merzouga. Our bus driver stopped in the middle of nowhere and a hotel keeper (probably his cousin) was waiting for us. I was furious, it was a bad start to the excursion. Once in the hotel, we refused point blank to go with him to the extent that we got the camel tour for about half price.
After this misadventure the rest of the stay was unforgettable. A night spent in the middle of Erg Chebbi, in a camp that you can only get to by camel, is incredibly romantic. Before eating tagine for supper we had fun in the dunes and did some light-painting under the stars. The next day, the hotel keeper, not so bad in the end, let us eat breakfast, have a shower and enjoy the view of Erg Chebbi from his roof terrace before taking us to another bus.  
I loved how close Erg Chebbi was to the houses and the colours as the sun came up.

Erg Chebbi was our first sight of a desert and what a sight it was! The feeling of vastness, the camel's nonchalant steps, the wind moving the sand, dinner in a Berber tent, the sunset; these were the elements of an exceptional day. The sun shaping the landscape gave us wonderful opportunities to bring home fabulous photos. An impression of another world but so accessible as to be within reach.
We were accompanied by an outstanding cook and the taste of his tajine will remain with us. It is a shame that more and more 4x4s and quads come to disfigure the dunes and spoil the peace of the place. An additional romantic stop on your <a href="/morocco/"> journey through Morocco. </a>

Erg Chebbi is a piece of desertdotted with dunes which change according to the wind. An essential stop to discover this ecosystem and to spend a madly romantic night. An easy place to test an unusual form of transport: the camel.
