Teotihuacan is often described as one of the most beautiful sites in Mexico. And in Nahualt (the Aztec language) its name means "home of the gods". Obviously the Aztecs thought it was much too grand to have been built by humans. They even thought that the universe was created from this town. It's not too eloquent to describe it as a sort of centre of the world, and it's definitely something you should add to your <a href="/mexico/">Mexican itinerary</a>, especially as it is very near the capital.

This is a pre-hispanic city about 50 kilometres from Mexico City which had a second life during the Aztec era.

Teotihuacan is Mexico's best known archaeological site, and its visitors are very impressed by the size of the preserved monuments. Even though the ethnic origin of its population is still uncertain, the economic and political importance of this civilization is in no doubt and the size of its temples demonstrate this. At the entrance to the prehistoric city, I remember how I was struck by the impressive Pyramid of the Moon, which stands at the end of the Avenue of the Dead.
