The pre-Colombian era saw extraordinary civilizations flourish; and many locations in Mexico still hold remnants of the time period still exist all around … The Spanish settlers also left a sumptuous heritage: their baroque architecture has been well preserved in several towns… For all of these reasons, as well as its gastronomy, music and lovely climate all year around. Clearly, Mexico can't be beat!

Isla Holbox still remains a largely unknown little corner of paradise for the moment and is somewhere to visit and discover <a href="/mexico/">when visiting Mexico</a>. So much the better! Here, it's golf carts you see instead of cars. When I first arrived, I hired a tent, slipped on my swimming trunks and headed straight to the white, sandy beach and the turquoise water of the absolutely wonderful Caribbean Sea. Pelicans fly circling above the water, plunging down head-first to catch fish. Others, already full, swim just a few metres from the bathers. At the island's tiny and only village I noticed that prices weren't inflated in the way they usually are at coastal resorts. The island's inhabitants are extremely friendly and very hospitable. I spent the particular day in question in the shade of the coconut palms, sunbathing and swimming. I stayed there until I had the chance to watch and admire the wonderful sunset. It's good to take things easy.

Holbox, is without a doubt THE destination for people who like to take their time when they are travelling. The island is wonderful, turquoise water, white sand, palm trees...The whole Caribbean package is jaw dropping. However, the spot is completely different from the rest of the coast from the point of view of tourism. Few visitors go there, perhaps because it has rejected any of the concrete structures usually built to accommodate mass tourists: Holbox is the complete opposite of Cancun.

An island paradise in the north of the Yucatan peninsula, which is very different to the tourist towns of Quintana Roo.
