I didn't like Cancun or the Mexican Las Vegas (as I like to call it) at all! The setting is stunning (turquoise sea, white sand, palm trees) but blighted by hotels, complexes and resorts. It's a typical seaside resort but, without trying to be too negative, overun by gringos&nbsp;and Europeans who only want to do one thing - party night and day. If you want to show off and spend loads of money, then this is the place. You'll also be interested to learn that people don't pay with pesos but with US Dollars. Plus it's exhorbitantly expensive - tourist prices as opposed to other Mexican destinations that, to Brits, are cheap.

In the beginning, Cancun was an expensive and elite destination, but it was completely rebuilt in the '70s when mass tourism took off. The Mexican government were the first to invest because they thought that tourism was the key to economic development. Very quickly the thin strip of land was invaded by luxury hotels which nowadays are everywhere and which have destroyed the biodiversity of this little paradise.

Cancún, from what I could see <a href="/mexico/">on a trip to Mexico</a>, has lost all its traditional charm and authenticity. Its location, however, is truly superb. What a pity! Because the sand bank on which it stands, surrounded by crystal clear water, has been ravaged, overexploited, and covered in hotels and other buildings. The beaches are dirty too. It truly is an eyesore. They've achieved what they wanted, however, because each year thousands of Americans come here to celebrate their famous spring break. As a party destination, of course, it's great: drinks galore, yacht-based cruises/night clubs day and night, discos on the beach with the sand between your toes, and an endless supply of alcohol. If you go there knowing what you're in for, with the sole aim of partying, then fine. Otherwise head somewhere else.
