It was an important trading post during the nineteenth century, when goods were transported on foot from Antananarivo by the forest trails of the east. Vatomandry is popular with the inhabitants of the capital because its beaches are the closest to Tana. Between the beaches and forests, lovers of relaxation and sports alike will find their heart's content. There are many trails that can be covered on foot or by bicycle. Water sports are also on the agenda. Vatomandry is a good surfing spot thanks to the low pressure systems of the Indian Ocean.
