Interspersed with a dry dense forest, rivers and lakes and adorned with dunes and a beautiful coral reef where dolphins and dugongs swim, this region is a place conducive to biodiversity. Bordered by the Kapiloza and Andranomano Rivers, as well as the Mozambique Channel, the Baie de Baly Reserve is the haven where more than 80% of the island's marine bird species live, including the endangered bald eagle, Madagascar's largest of bird of prey, the African sacred ibis and the heron. But the reserve's superstar is the angonoka, also known as the ploughshare or spurred tortoise, the plastron or ventral part of the shell is prominent.
