I have a very fond memory of my visit to Miyajima Island, thanks to its strong cultural and historical character set in an exceptional natural environment. So I highly recommend you not to miss a stopover on this island if you are in this part of the country.
First of all, there is the visit to the "Gateway to Japan," I mean the famous torii of Itsukushima Shrine, which is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site and which is majestically planted in the water just a few steps from the coast. And don't forget to take a photo of the torii with Mount Misen in the background: an unforgettable memory! I was able to approach the torii up close because it was low tide when I was there.
I also succumbed to a strong impression of spirituality in Miyajima. It's a little like the image of Japan: an island that offers a fabulous natural space, imbued with tranquillity, where the deer graze nonchalantly, not to mention the interesting visit to the Itsukushima Shrine.
