If you want to have an idea of how Americanised Israeli society is then go to Eilat. Eilat is a sort of Las Vegas on the Red Sea coast, full of shopping centres, gigantic hotels, chain restaurants and a water park. So there's no point going there for antiquities... But, once you are over the first impression you can always tell yourself that it would be fun to spend a couple of days having fun in this strange world.   Personally, if I go to Eilat, it's not because the town is charming, but because it's in a very special place: right on the northern tip of the Red Sea, between Egypt, Jordan and Saudi Arabia, in the middle of the mountains that are set alight by the sunset and whose reflections turn the sea red. I love sea beds, and there I only have to put on a snorkel and I can see multicoloured fish just a few metres from the shore, along the coral reef. This show makes me say that, despite the overwhelming urbanism, Eilat is really worth visiting during a <a href="/israel/">trip to Israel</a>.
