If we have loved the Island of Gods, the pearl of Indonesia, which has had such great tourist success for many years now, we can't deny that it is suffering for its fame. Makassar is a noisy, polluted large town. Even so, there are a few things worth visiting such as the Sultan's Palace, which houses a museum. There's also a great view over the Bay of Tanjung Bunga. That said, this town is more of stopover, thanks to its airport, which serves Kuala Lumpur (Malaysia) and Denpasar (Bali) - great if you want to tour the Toraja country, something I heartily recommend.
If you want to enjoy the buzz of a large Sulawesi town, then you can easily plunge yourself into its metropolitan frenzy.
I do suggest you head uphill to admire the stunning view of Tanjung Bunga Bay at sunset.
