If we have loved the Island of Gods, the pearl of Indonesia, which has had such great tourist success for many years now, we can't deny that it is suffering for its fame. The environment is deteriorating year by year, mainly due to the plague of plastic which is everywhere and which the government does nothing about. Rubbish is not treated and the plastic remains.

Once we had arrived in Sanur we left our things in our home stay then decided to go to the beach. It still wasn't too late to enjoy the beach before the human tidal wave arrived at the end of the day. A small problem: some of the areas on the beach are sometimes very dirty (rubbish, plastic). So you have to have a little patience to find the perfect spot. Once night had fallen, we decided to go out to eat at the night market. The stands were all releasing delicious smells of local plates, our mouths were watering: nasi goreng, martabak, ayam goreng... We talked, we shared our plates, we laughed: the simple happiness of being together. Sanur allowed us to relax during our trip and to recharge our batteries.

During my previous trips, experience taught me to better prepare for my <a href="/indonesia/">Balinese holiday</a> than I had for other parts of Southeast Asia. Bali is really touristy and I didn't want to go backpacking. Sanur is the ideal resort from which to start a tour of the island It's a small, east coast town, lined by a magnificent beach and restaurants that serve fresh fish all day long and where you can also enjoy a massage whilst listening to waves gently wash up on the beach. It's fun to walk around town, which may be full of shops and restaurants (there's even a Starbucks!), but it's relaxing all the same. Well it is if you can avoid all the taxi drivers and clothes sellers who buzz around like flies! The plus: if you head out of town you'll find small 'warungs' (restaurants) that serve good quality, cheap dishes. The locals will point you in the right direction. The downside: you need to book your accommodation in advance, otherwise it can get pricey. You'll find some great deals online.

Sanur is a calm, family orientated seaside resort on the east coast of Bali and a great base from which to visit the south and east of the island.
