Considered to be one of Indonesia's most active and dangerous volcanoes, Gunung Merapi attracts the curious. With a five-year eruption cycle, it certainly makes its presence felt among the local communties - each eruption being bigger and more devastating than the previous one.
It's both feared and greatly admired by the residents of the region. Indeed, many locals believe Mount Merapi to be the protector of the Sultan of <a href="/indonesia/">Jogjakarta</a>. Indeed, each year the Sultan organises a procession to the summit, by way of appeasing and foreseeing any future bursts of fury by this giant.
If you want to visit Gundung Merapi, do as I did and hire a guide. They'll love telling you the many tales that exist about the volcano, its neighbouring communities and its eruptions. Going on a trip to Merapi gives you the chance to explore an area where history and legend thrive. In my opinion, it's these aspects that make an excursion to Merapi worthwhile...not forgetting the wonderful scenery and nature hikes of course!
