Bhuj suffered from an enormous earthquake in 2001, which destroyed most of its buildings and monuments. At the same time, I found it a fascinating place, as I roamed through ruined palaces and buildings, invaded by plants that had sprouted on their foundations. I loved seeing the old town, which is protected by cracked ramparts. Sadly, a lot of palaces and monuments are still in poor condition and, therefore, too dangerous to visit. So don't expect to be able to visit all of its sites. Bhuj has another side of life to enjoy. Sitting by a lake, you can see locals wash their clothes at the water's edge, do their ritual ablutions, take a bath or clean their dishes! It's an unusual, unique place to visit during a <a href="/india/">trip to India</a> and you'll feel in touch with its people.

Bhuj is a quiet, peaceful city in the state of Gujarat, and an enjoyable place to stroll around. Though buzzing with activity as in all Indian cities, the little alleys of its bazaar nevertheless offer their own kind of serenity, which encourages the traveler to tranquilly wander amid the stalls, with their myriad colors and countless flavors. 
However, the city of Bhuj wasn't the reason I caught the night bus from Ahmedabad, but rather the surrounding area: the district of Kutch around Bhuj, part of the state of Gujarat, is famous for its tribal regions and spectacular landscapes. And neither of these two destinations disappoint! I therefore took the opportunity, whilst in India, to spend a few days exploring this rich and highly colorful culture in the company of a local guide. What a delight! The salt desert is amazingly huge, whilst the villages around Bhuj offer the wonderful spectacle provided by the contrast between the arid landscapes and the dazzling colors of the traditional clothing worn by the women and children. I'll long remember the honest smiles of the women, with their brightly colored dresses decorated with delicate patterns and arms entirely covered in bracelets, the mischievous looks of the children and the, admirable poise and posture of the turbaned men! To travel to Bhuj is also to travel back in time, to set off on a journey on which you will encounter fascinating cultures and traditions.
On returning to the bazaar in Bhuj, I treated myself to some of the delicious local specialties and had an enjoyable time completing my Indian shopping: the stalls sell wonderful batiks and local jewelry, perfect as souvenirs of these few days in Bhuj!
