Along with her sister site, Ellora, Ajanta's caves are a main attraction for tourists on <a href="/india/">vacation in India</a>. When I was touring the region, I used Aurangabad as my base from which to visit Ajanta, as it's easy to find accommodation there. Even if it's possible to stay at Ajanta, it's not the best plan. Today, Ajanta is classified as a UNESCO World Heritage Site and its collection of 26 caves, carved into the mountainside, are amazing. Throughout my visit I was spellbound by the beauty of the sculptures and wall paintings. They are extremely well preserved and are stunning examples of Buddhist art. Each cave is different and each one is magical. It's a favorite site for Indian tourists and the few Western visitors spark their curiosity. When I visited, I met an entire school that was on an outing to the caves. I spent 30 minutes having my photo taken with each pupil. It was a moment of friendship in a perfect setting. And that's one of the sides of India that I love.
