I had some expectations of this island, which was recommended to me by a traveller I met during my holiday in India and I wasn't disappointed. The locals are laid back and curious. You'll feel right at home on this island. The urban areas blend Indian styles with a Portuguese colonial influence.
Visit the Diu Fort! The walk around the site is lovely and allows you to breathe in the sea air, whilst admiring the imposing fortifications and canons. The beaches, however, are far from ideal. They're covered in rubbish. What's more, the sea is rough due to its geographical location.
I particularly enjoyed crossing the island by moped. Having the freedom to go where I pleased was great. Best of all, there are plenty of places to eat fish and have a drink, which is not that common in this region.

To the south of Gujarat, this former Portuguese island is a favourite with backpackers, thanks to its laid back atmosphere.

Come to Diu, to feel like you're at the end of the world on <a href="/india/">a trip to India</a> ! In fact, after you've passed through all of Rajasthan and Gujarat, you'll finally get to this peninsula, away from all the mass tourism. This former Portuguese enclave is the only place in Gujarat where you can buy alcohol! You'll come across a lot of Indian tourists who come here for just that reason. The beaches are wonderful and often deserted, with charming fishing villages. I also remember some good restaurants where I ate some delicious seafood and grilled fish on a terrace facing the sea. Take the time to walk peacefully around the island, with a cold beer on the beach, and watch life quietly unfolding before your very eyes.
