Between the active volcano, high mountain and dense forest, I found the scenery both unique and calming. The volcano is made up of a caldera, inside of which there are nine eruptive centers. Two of the volcanic cones are cratered - the Von Seebach and the Santa Maria peaks. The second of these boasts a summit of 1,916 meters. 
The National Park that houses the Rincon de la Vieja, covers 14,000 hectares and is home to several species. Excursions lasting from 2 to 8 hours will give you enough time to explore the animal and plant life in <a href="/costa-rica/">this isolated part of Costa Rica</a>.
I can recommend the Las Pailas trail - one of the most spectacular in the park. The Cangreja track runs through thick vegetation and you'll see some amazing waterfalls. Climbing up to the crater is a long, hard walk and you'll need to be in shape. Hot springs, fumaroles and mud pools are scattered across the volcano's slopes. Don't miss out La Fortuna waterfall, which is not far away from the volcano.
