It is built on cliffs, by the side of the Mengdong River. Arriving by a very winding road, you instantly fall under the charm of its old houses, which are mainly inhabited by members of the Tujia minority. It feels like time has stood still in Furongzhen: children swim and play in the river whilst women wash their laundry close by. This cinematic-like atmosphere and setting attracts large numbers of Chinese filmmakers; the celebrated film Furongzhen was shot here in the 1980s for example. The road between Furongzhen and Zhangjiajie is simply majestic, with mountains, valleys and forests along its whole 80 kilometers. Don't miss the chance to visit the Wulingyuan Scenic and Historical Interest Area, not far from Zhangjiajie. The site is inscribed as UNESCO World Heritage and the scenery there is spectacular. You'll get to see and admire waterfalls, caves and in particular pointed rock formations, tens of meters high, rising up toward the sky like arrows. A wonder of nature!
