The name Lhassa literally means the 'place of gods'. Former capital of the Kingdom of Tibet, it remains today the economic, commercial and religous hub of the Tibet Autonomous Region of the People's Republic of China. For a long time foreigners were forbidden entry to the city (and it's still a controlled area) , but, nonetheless, Lhassa has rapidly evolved.
