Everyone knows about the size of China's population and the power of it's economy. However, actually experiencing it first hand is a completely different matter. We travelled to Beijing and returned from Shanghai. Between times we undertook 2 long train journeys (one overnight), 2 internal flights and a number of long minibus journeys. That really gave us a feel for the scale and diversity of this fascinating, friendly and exciting country.
* Everything running smoothly - guides always there to meet us.
* Quality of accommodation - ranged from good to very good indeed.
* Guilin and surrounding areas - such a contrast to the wealthier areas, rice terrace visit phenomenal.
* Shanghai - I don't have sufficient vocabulary. Breathtaking.
* Chinese people - warm, funny, friendly.
* Guides - so informative, polite, knowledgeable, helpful, friendly.
* Too many temples. Fascinating at first, but eventually wore thin.
* The oppressive climate (would go at a different time of year).
* At some tourist attractions the sheer volume of other tourists massively detracted from enjoyment.
* By day 12 eating Chinese food twice each day had begun to pall (minor issue only).
