The plateau where Sen Monorom is located is about 3000 feet above sea level, making it a cool region for Cambodia. The climate plays a particularly important role and you'll need to consider it in your travel plans. The rainy season makes access to the town complicated because of landslides. As for winter, don't forget your fleece, because it gets cold at night!

Stung Treng is the last major town before the Laos border (with Si Phan Don – or "4000 Islands" – lying just 50 kilometres away). It's simply a place at which to make a brief stopover and has nothing of any real interest to offer, except perhaps that it serves as a way to get to Ratanakiri.

I really liked Koh Kong, which is a quiet, clean destination and still pristine when it comes to the flora and fauna.  I didn't stay the night in Koh Kong, where there are several nice hotels located on the seafront, but I preferred the village of Tatai, 30 minutes away, located in the heart of mangroves and the jungle. I went kayaking and climbing, and I visited mangroves. I also went to the Tatai waterfall, where people can swim during the dry season (December to June).  Koh Kong is a beautiful destination for families because there is a beach and many things to do, but it is also a romantic destination, perfect for a unique honeymoon.  Note: Koh Kong is also well known by Asian tourists because it is on the border with Thailand, so there are several casinos.

In the high season, Koh Kong is very popular and I was unpleasantly surprised to learn that everywhere was full when I arrived in Sihanoukville. Given that communication between the mainland and the island is not 100%, I took the boat to see if I could find somewhere to stay, or to wait for the next day.  Either aspeed boat or an ordinary boat can take you to Koh Kong. I decided on the first because it was a lot quicker. When I arrived at the jetty I saw a row of bars and restaurants facing the beach. A little further away, there were bungalows. Behind this row of buildings there was...jungle! It's a lovely place and the beach is beautiful and clean. If you go a bit further on you can easily find yourself alone, with nobody around you.  If you really prefer solitude then you can cross the island and the jungle and go to Long Beach: a sublime beach with few buildings on it, where you'll feel like you are at the ends of the earth.  Koh Kong doesn't have many activities because most of the island is inaccessible due to the vegetation. But you can go diving, spend the evening drinking, or go for long swims in the sea. In short, it's ideal for relaxing in the the sort of scenery you dream about.
