The plateau where Sen Monorom is located is about 3000 feet above sea level, making it a cool region for Cambodia. The climate plays a particularly important role and you'll need to consider it in your travel plans. The rainy season makes access to the town complicated because of landslides. As for winter, don't forget your fleece, because it gets cold at night!

Stung Treng is the last major town before the Laos border (with Si Phan Don – or "4000 Islands" – lying just 50 kilometres away). It's simply a place at which to make a brief stopover and has nothing of any real interest to offer, except perhaps that it serves as a way to get to Ratanakiri.

For me, Tatai represents Cambodia's last remaining natural wilderness, a place where you can actually go trekking through the jungles of the Cardamom Mountains or the mangroves to see and admire the plants and wildlife there. The several hotels located on the water here are veritable havens of peace and tranquillity. The two I got to sleep at were wonderful places: brilliant for adventurous families, but above all else romantic, and perfect for honeymoons!  Apart from enjoying the local nature and the natural environment or going for a trip on the river, there isn't really much to do in Tatai itself. This is why I took advantage of the opportunity to visit Chi Phat, 30 minutes from Tatai, and spend a few days with the wonderful local community there.

This is what we did when we arrived from the capital, we jumped on our little scooter for an hour's drive to Tatai waterfall, slaloming around the holes, over the sandy bits, and then we left our bikes (after having paid two dollars and getting a receipt - because we weren't born yesterday! ) to dive into the forest for two kilometres after which we found a beautiful river and pools on different levels which beckoned us in to paddle and finally to swim. We were nearly alone in a wild landscape, there were none of the noises humans make, although lots of mosquitos and it was delciously cool. It's a detail, but in the end not serious in the middle of the monsoon season, which you really need to bear in mind during a <a href="/cambodia/">trip to Cambodia</a>.

The river Tatai doesn't have many visitors, it's still relatively unexplored.
