The plateau where Sen Monorom is located is about 3000 feet above sea level, making it a cool region for Cambodia. The climate plays a particularly important role and you'll need to consider it in your travel plans. The rainy season makes access to the town complicated because of landslides. As for winter, don't forget your fleece, because it gets cold at night!

Stung Treng is the last major town before the Laos border (with Si Phan Don – or "4000 Islands" – lying just 50 kilometres away). It's simply a place at which to make a brief stopover and has nothing of any real interest to offer, except perhaps that it serves as a way to get to Ratanakiri.

I spent a whole day at Phnom Kulen: it's a place where you can do this without getting bored. You do need to set off quite early though as it's more than two hours away from Siem Reap.  I recommend heading off to explore the mountain jungle first. It's possible to do this in the company of one of the local guides who wait at the entrance to the village. In fact this is the recommended option: they'll take you to see sculptures hidden in the forest as well as caves and other interesting sites in the mountains.  Kbal Spean is the place to visit next: a site located along Cambodia's sacred Stung Kbal Spean River. There are more than 1,000 little linga sculptures (Buddhist phallic symbols) carved into the river bed here – quite an impressive sight!  After trekking through the jungle for three hours, I really enjoyed the opportunity to cool down at the nearby waterfall. It's actually a very popular meeting place for the Khmer people, who often come here at weekends (it can quickly get packed!) to picnic and relax.
