Perched at 2,400m and surrounded by an arid, isolated, mountainous landscape, the Selim Pass is without doubt one of the most beautiful places in the country. You're bound to use it if you're on the Sevan Lake road, in the south of the country. In the heart of this lunar landscape you'll stumble upon a small, stone building that's easily missed by travellers. Dating back to the 14th Century, the Selim caravanserai is one of the best preserved of its kind in the world. It was built by Prince Chesar Orbelian to accommodate travellers and their animals seeking shelter on this gruelling pass. I was particularly impressed by its interior, where the sleeping quarters and other period features remain incredibly intact. It's a fascinating building nestled in one of <a href="/armenia/">the country's harshest regions</a>.
