Its very rich&nbsp;unique culture,&nbsp;its varied breath-taking scenery&nbsp;or even&nbsp;its dynamic and bustling capital city, Buenos Aires,&nbsp;mesmerise travellers. Whether you choose to concentrate on one area, or alternatively travel the breadth and width of the country,&nbsp;a trip to Argentina has what it takes to satisfy all your desires. Its landmass covers a part of the luxurious&nbsp;amazon forest, pampas plains, and also the steppes and glaciers of Patagonia for&nbsp;enthusiasts of extensive&nbsp;hikes and treks. Argentina also shares two of its geographical landmarks between its neighbours, who are witnesses to the incredible diversity that the country has to offer: in the north-east the majestic&nbsp;Iguazu Falls&nbsp;are divided into three parts; one in Brazil, another in Paraguay, and finally the most spectacular falls of the park which are home to the Devil’s Throat, on the Argentinian side. Nearly 4,300km from there, at the southernmost point of the country, Argentina covers a third of the legendary Tierra del Fuego, the rest of which is controlled by Chile.&nbsp;Ushuaïa&nbsp;still remains to this day the Eldorado of escapism in the hearts of adventurers. Tilcara is my favourite village in the province of Jujuy. If you are going to visit Quebrada de Humahuaca during your <a href="/argentina/">trip to North West Argentina</a>. then I recommend you stay here. Just like at Purmamarca, the mud roads and dust give it an atmosphere of the wild west . The village is simple: low houses, a craft market, two main squares and a main road.
Lots of young Argentines go to Tilcara on holiday in the southern summer. I like its festival atmosphere, the wonderful carnival, restaurants, bars and peñas which are always full of people.
While there you absolutely must walk up to the heights of Tilcara and visit Pucara, a major, 8 hectare big, archaeological site, which sheds light on the 800 year history of the village. There are houses, a necropolis and a temple; plus a magnificent 360°panorama of the Rio Grande, the valley and the heights of Quebrada de Humahuaca. Absolutely beautiful!

Tilcara is a little village whose countryside is very characteristic of northern Argentina. It is surrounded by cactus covered mountains and the view is magnificent! The little coloured houses just add to the charm. 
I spent several hours in the small crafts market in the village's central square. It had all sorts of objects that were typical of the region so I managed to get some souvenirs and presents to take home. There are also several clean, pleasant restaurants. However, you only need a day to visit this small village.
Not far from Tilcara you can do the Garganta del Diablo walk which takes about an hour. The waterfall isn't very impressive but the walk is very pleasant!

Tilcara is a small village right up in the mountains, which you should visit during <a href="/argentina/">a trip to Argentina</a>.

Though coming here wasn't an experience that will leave me with lasting memories, I did find Tilcara nice as a town to stay at when visiting the Quebrada de Humahuaca region. In fact it's not unusual for tourists to stay the night here when exploring the local area. The reason being that this is the closest town to the very beautiful "Hill of Seven Colours", which can be reached on foot directly from Tilcara.
If you happen to find yourself in Salta and have enough time available, I recommend hiring a car for two to three days and heading off to explore this region. I ventured a bit further afield when I did it and particularly enjoyed visiting the tiny town of Iruya to the north, with its little narrow streets and its panoramic views out over the valley. Having said all this, however, I don't really consider the area around Tilcara to be one of the essential places to visit when <a href="/argentina/">in Argentina</a>.
