The best time of year to visit Albania is during mid-season, particularly in May and September. Temperatures are higher in August and tourism is at its peak, but you can travel then all the same if you reserve in advance. Although it snows for several months of the year in the mountains, temperatures are generally very comfortable in Albania, and rarely fall past zero in winter.

A trip to Albania is a very good choice for fans of hiking. You can set off along one of the most beautiful hiking trails in Europe, between the two ancient cities of Berat and Girokastra, both classed as UNESCO world heritage sites. The routes aren't always well fenced off, so if you can, set off with a buddy or guide. Choose the period from May to September, and if possible, avoid the month of August.

Be sure to visit the Burrës amphitheatre, vast and impressive. Then leave for Butrint, where you'll feel the influence of various civilisations leading right back to the Middle Ages. You'll discover there different religious monuments and many artefacts from the time. Finally, pay a visit to the tombs of Basse Selca, which are absolutely superb. The best time to visit is between May and September, but avoid the month of August, notorious for crowds and stifling heat.

On the Albanian coast, you can walk along the cliffs and the coves, stopping off at beaches which are mostly nice and empty. If you're after some peace and quiet, you should definitely head here. As for day trips, you'll discover the Grecian city of Apollonia, the villages of Vuno and Qeparo and the monastery of Ardenica. Take the SH8 motorway, which runs the length of the Riviera Albania, and spend some time relaxing on the beaches and in the mountains.
